Historique :
Enceinte circulaire surélevée sur laquelle fut construite un sheel-keep. Ce site stratégique commande la vallée de l'Huisne. Le château dut subir en 1077 le siège de Guillaume le Conquérant lorsque son fils révolté, Robert Courteheuse, s'y enferma avec le seigneur du Thimerais qui tenait cette forteresse de Rotrou II. Guillaume fit établir quatre fortifications (mottes ou enceintes) pour surveiller la place et la bloquer. Le site présente également l'intérêt d'être un parfait exemple de bourg castral. L'urbanisation s'est faite en partant de la basse-cour, et le long d'une voie menant au prieuré.Classement monument historique :
